Cork is a City of Learning

Now in its second year, the Cork Lifelong Learning Festival provides an opportunity to celebrate and showcase the variety of lifelong learning opportunities available across the city and suburbs. The festival brings learning out to where people are, with events taking place in shopping centres, libraries, community centres, halls and other venues. Many events are hands on, giving people a chance to get involved and give it a go. Whatever your age or circumstances there are a range of options open to you. From computers to crochet, drama to degrees, sports to science, the opportunities to learn are endless.

With approximately 90 events to choose from you'll have a hard time deciding what to visit during the festival. Check out the attached programme of events.

Changes to the Lifelong Learning Festival Programme
on Friday 8 April 2005

Due to the funeral of His Holiness Pope John Paul II the programme for Friday 8 April is subject to some change. At the moment it is primarily those events involving schools which are subject to change – confirmed changes are listed below.

• Community education networks showcase learning opportunities – originally scheduled for 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Blackpool Shopping Centre on Friday 8th April this will now take place at the same time on Thursday 7 April.
• Farranree Community Education Network – scheduled for 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. in Blackpool Shopping Centre on Friday 8 April. This event will now take place over 2 days – some of the participants will exhibit as planned on Friday while others will exhibit on Thursday 7 (venue for both dates is Blackpool Shopping Centre). The performance of Scoil Aiseiri Chriost band scheduled for 11-12 will take place at the same time on Thursday.
• Centre for the Unemployed – Open day. The centre will be closed on the morning of Friday 8 April – open day will resume from 2-4 p.m.
• On Your Bike – the display of cycling skills in Scoil Barra Naofa on Friday 8 April has been cancelled.
• Information Morning for Adults - College of Commerce - this event has been postponed until Friday 15 April.
• Switch Onto Computers - IT training in Colaiste Stiofain Naofa from 10-12 has been cancelled.

About the Festival

The Lifelong Learning Festival seeks to celebrate and promotes learning in all its forms and encourage take up amongst people from all age groups and backgrounds. It provides a platform for learners of all ages and learning providers to showcase the results of their learning, and highlights the many opportunities for learning through free and accessible events. The Festival has been organised by a working group of the Cork City Learning Forum, which brings together all the learning stakeholders in Cork City.

The festival organisers would like to acknowledge the support received from City of Cork VEC, FETAC, Cork City Council, Ballyphehane Credit Union and the Evening Echo. Thanks also to all the event organisers.

Building on this year’s success, the 2005 festival will involve even more people in a wider range of activities. We hope you too will take part in the 2005 Lifelong Learning Festival.

The photo includes people representing some of the activities featured in this year's festival - Circus skills, Tae-kwon-do, soccer, Dog grooming plus singer Jennifer Clarke from Colaiste Stiofain Naofa who performs at the Celebration Concert on 8 April in City Hall (2 days after the launch of her new single). These are just some of the activities featured in this year's festival.
